Junction Improvement Project (G - South Ward, Mumbai)

1. Manohar Phalke Chowk, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.
At the intersection of Sayani Road and Gokhale road, this junction sees a high volume of vehicular as well as pedestrian traffic. The challenge was to deal with on street taxi parking at the corner, a bus depot exit gate and heavy motor vehicle parking due to a nearby construction site. The strategies included introduction of a refuge island, curb extensions and introducing bus bays.
2. J K Kapur Chowk, Worli, Mumbai
Due to the huge number of road accidents, this junction was identified as black spot. On analysis it was found that the disproportionate size of the Y intersection along with the overgrown shrubs caused visual barriers for the speeding vehicles arriving from Sea link. The strategies included junction compaction, introducing traffic calming measures and profile adjustment.
3. Mela Junction, Worli, Mumbai.
This famous junction is one of the major traffic points in the city. Studies indicated issues caused due to flouting of traffic rules, absence of pedestrian infrastructure, and bottle necks due to lane narrowing. The strategies adopted were introduction of an island, pedestrian infrastructure and traffic engineering.
